The most common nutrition related health condition in dogs in our society is obesity. It is estimated that 24%-44% of pet dogs in this country suffer from obesity. Obesity is defined as an excess of body fat such that body weight is 20%-25% above ideal. Many studies document the adverse effects of obesity, including skeletal stress, cardiopulmonary disease, and poor reproductive performance. The primary cause of obesity is overeating. Seventy percent of a dog's daily caloric needs are used for maintenance of the body at rest. The other 30% supplies the energy used in physical activity. When caloric intake exceeds energy expended, the excess is stored a fat. Regular consumption of an extra 1% calories can result in a 25% increase over optimum body weight by middle. Obesity is more common in certain breeds, including Labrador retrievers, beagles, bassets, cocker spaniels, and dachshunds. Generally, females are at greater risk than males, and unless fed appropriately, neutered pets are twice as likely to be overweight. Determination of obesity includes both visual and palpation. Clinical abnormalities associated with obesity include: Cardiovascular Disease, Musculoskelatal Disease, Decreases Hepatic Function, Decreased Immune Competence, Diabetes Mellitus, Hypothyroidism, Dermatosis. Dogs are prone to get fat on a diet supplemented by table scraps and dog biscuit treats. The solution, is to give the dog a steady nutritious diet and make sure he gets his excercise.

Some Little Tidbits: Bleeding from a cut or wound can usually be stopped by applying direct pressure to the wound. Overweight animals, breeds with long hair or thick coats, and brachycephalic breeds have an increased risk for heat-induced illness. Open fractures can be very serious because of the high risk of infection due to exposure of the bone and the surrounding deeper supportive tissues. Hypothermia can occur even though pets have thick protective hair coats. Do not put any oils, ointments, or creams on a burn. Tourniquets cut off circulation to the area below the site of placement and may cause irreparable harm to those tissues that are deprived of their blood supply. Bite wounds should be cleaned as you would clean any wound and protected with an antibiotic ointment. Do not induce vomitting if a pet is found to be unconscious, if the animal has swallowed corrosives or strong acids, petroleum distillates, cleaning fluids, or strychnine, or if the identity of the ingested material is unknown. An eye that has been exposed to an irritant should be flushed for 5 or more minutes with copious amounts of water or saline solution. A mixture of baking soda and water may relieve much of the immediate discomfort caused by bee sting venom, whereas wasp stings may be relieved with vinegar. In traumatic or severely debilitating situations the first aid provided often has tremendous impact on the survivability of the animal. Getting off to a Good Start!!! For dog lovers, almost nothing can compare to the experience of getting a new puppy. For both the seasoned and novice owner, getting off to a good start can pave the way for an enjoyable, lifelong companion. Events during the first few months of a puppy's life can determine whether the owners will keep and cherish their pet. Canine Development...Traditionally, the development of the dog has been divided into five stages or sensitive periods: Neonatal (newborn) period-1 to 2 weeks of age...Transitional period-3 weeks of age...Socialization period-4 to 10 weeks of age...Juvenile period-10 weeks of age to sexual maturity...Adult-puberty onward. The interactions that occur, especially during the first three periods, can have a lasting impact on behavioral growth and development. Neonatal Period is a time of relative quiet. During this stage the puppy is deaf and blind and only able to nurse using tactile and offactory cues. Most of the puppy's time is spent eating and sleeping, and motor ability is limited. Transitional Period is fairly short, yet much happens during this time. At about 10 to 14 days of age, the puppy's eyes open its sense of hearing develops, and it receives greater stimulation than before. Urination and defecation begin to occur spontaneously. Puppies also begin to walk, and early play behavior can be observed during this period. Socialization Period (4 to 10 weeks of age) has the greatest impact on puppies and their relationship to people. This stage is often referred to as the "critical period of socialization," because what does or does not occur during this time can have a large impact on later behavior. The time frame of this stage is not absolute; the beginning is fairly clear-cut, but thee ending is not. The importance of this time, however, cannot be understated. Although dogs can still learn and be exposed to new situations throughout like, the changes and learning that take place when the animal is older are not as dramatic as those in this socialization period. This is the time when puppies learn about their littermates, the bitch, and humans. All of these interactions are important for balanced behavioral development and will combine with the genetic influences on personality and behavior that are inherited. Puppies need to spend time with littermates and adult dogs to learn appropriate social interactions. Playtime is spent chasing and chewing on littermates. This biting behavior is extremely important--a young puppy learns to inhibit its bite through the constant chewing on other puppies and the ensuing reactions. Without this important behavioral lesson, severe ramifications are possible. Puppies that are removed from their littermates early, often have difficulties around other dogs when they become adults.(fear of,and / or aggressiveness towards other dogs may occur) Equally important is the puppy's exposure to people before 12 weeks of age. Lack of people exposure may also cause fear and aggressive behavior. Another phenomenon that occurs during socialization period is bonding. Though the excitement of bringing your new puppy home may seem like an eternity, giving your puppy enough time to stay with its mother and littermates will make your life with your new dog well worth the few extra weeks of waiting! (remember, Planning is an essential ingredient in providing a smooth transition for the new puppy.) RESCUE--What is it? The purpose of a purebred rescue program is to take in stray, abandoned, relinquished and/or impounded purebreds; to provide them foster care, health and temperament screening; to nurture them and offer an opportunity for rehabilition; to spay or neuter them; and eventually to place the rescued purebreds in new homes.

Purebred rescue organizations are made up of folks who care deeply about their breed, and who are experts in all matters concerning their breed. Because of this, they are well-equipped to analyze, rehabilitate and place each dog in the type of home that is best for the individual dog.

If you are interested in a purebred dog who can become a loving pet, and you do not intend to show or breed your dog, you may want to give a rescue dog a second chance for a safe and loving home.
